CHEST 2025 is not one to miss

A look into the Scientific Program Committee’s planning meeting

A quality educational meeting starts with a great slate of programs tailored to its audience, and CHEST 2025 is on track to offer the highest tier of education for those in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine.

Although planning for the next meeting started shortly after CHEST 2024 wrapped up, the real fun began when the schedule started to take shape in mid-February. This was when members of the Scientific Program Committee gathered at CHEST Headquarters to solidify the educational lineup for CHEST 2025, taking place in Chicago, October 19 to 22.

In typical midwestern February fashion, the snow was falling heavily outside. But still, the excitement in the room was palpable as committee members reviewed the hundreds of thought-provoking session submissions from pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine specialists from around the world.

Chair of CHEST 2025, Sandhya Khurana, MD, FCCP, has high expectations for the meeting and is excited for everyone to be together in CHEST’s home city of Chicago. “There is something about Chicago,” Dr. Khurana said. “It has such a rich history, but it is also brimming with science and innovation. The vision for CHEST 2025 is to bring the latest in science and innovation while also recognizing how far we’ve come in medicine as the organization celebrates its 90th anniversary.”

To commemorate this milestone, CHEST will be reflecting on our last 90 years and asking ourselves, “Where do we want to be at 100 years? What will the pulmonary and critical care field have accomplished by then?”

The juxtapositions of history, discoveries, and innovation will be interwoven throughout the conference and curriculum as we revisit popular sessions and dive into new ones. With something for everyone in chest medicine, CHEST 2025 will feature more than 300 sessions spanning eight main curriculum groups:

  • Airways Disorders
  • Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Vascular Disease
  • Chest Infections, Disaster Medicine, and Systemic Disease
  • Critical Care
  • Interdisciplinary, Practice Operations, and Education
  • Interstitial Lung Disease and Transplant
  • Lung Cancer, Interventional Pulmonology, and Radiology
  • Sleep Medicine

“CHEST has always led the way in innovative education, and, this year, we’re going to continue to push that envelope. We’re being very intentional about programming sessions that appeal to our more seasoned learners who are practicing at the top of their scope and are interested in learning about recent advances in the field as well as what’s on the horizon,” Dr. Khurana said.

“At the same time, the CHEST meeting remains inclusive for everyone [trainees, early career clinicians, advanced practice providers] because that’s how we learn; by being in the room together and pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zones.”

The hands-on simulation offerings are also expanding this year to include on-site cadaver courses for the first time since CHEST 2019. Other simulation course offerings will feature the latest in robotic bronchoscopy, pleural procedures, and new techniques for managing difficult airways.

“Between the educational sessions, the hands-on simulation offerings, and the myriad activities for clinicians at all levels,” Dr. Khurana said, “you’re going to miss something if you do not attend CHEST 2025.”
